SHHH..!, 2016

National Theatre, Southbank, London

As a Trustee of Shape – the UK’s leading disability arts organisation – I offered to make a performance to celebrate their 40th anniversary at the National Theatre. As the various luminaries from the disability art world arrived for the champagne reception, I invited guests to read a printed short text saying:

‘The Government wants to believe that people are not ‘really’ disabled so that they can cut benefits and rights. Pose with me – in masked disguise – for a photo that humorously confirms their idea.’

Having contextualised the pose for guests in this way, I then produce burglar masks for us to wear whilst holding a sign and gesturing ‘shhh..!’ with a finger. The sign read:
‘Shhh..! – We Are Not Really Disabled!’
